Arriving here is like stepping into a living, breathing landscape painting. Deep in the Luberon, France, lavender fields line the country roads and colour them violet. The green of an immense nature reserve and its hillsides teeming with pines and olive trees meets the red of the cherries which mark the start of summer in the orchards.
These luscious fruits are harvested by the basket-load, and turned into delicious pies and rich preserves. Choose the months of March to May, and September to November for mild temperatures and moderate crowds. If you go in autumn, you will get to enjoy the olives and grape harvests.
