Area & Experiences
The village of Trou d’Eau Douce (“freshwater hole”) owes its name to a freshwater spring on the east coast of Mauritius. The place was discovered in the 17th century by Dutch settlers living further south in the Grand-Port district, who would come here to stock up on drinking water. During the island’s French era, a sugar refinery was set up here. Now in the middle of eggplant fields, a few remains from its past can still be seen.
