Description of Villa Galéné in Kéa, Cyclades, Greece

In Homer’s era, the islands forming the vast Cyclades archipelago were believed to be frequently visited by Greek gods. It is said that one of these islands, endowed with incredible beauty by nature, planted the seed of jealousy in the hearts of these easily irascible divinities. They decided to punish Kea, a small mountainous land divided by two idyllic valleys, where oak and olive trees and vines grow; a land where hilltop fishing villages become visible as you approach the coast. Inhabited by nymphs that led to its name as the isle of water, Kea drew upon itself terrible vengeance, wreaked in the form of a lion.

Later, a statue of the wild beast would be sculpted to commemorate this past. It still lies lazily near a tree, not far from the beaches of Sykamia and Kalydonihi, and the superb Villa Galéné, constructed at the edge of the Aegean Sea. Anchored to dry grassy hillside land making up the coast, the residence is accompanied by a large swimming pool and a terrace, on the heights from which one can see Kythnos, Serifos and Sifnos, three voluptuously shaped islands that stand out against the infinite sky.

A pergola supported by wooden beams shelters a summer living room, another rests on stone walls and protects a dining room that leads inside through a bay window. As soon as you enter, a feeling of peace and harmony is striking in the living room, thanks to the matching of white, dominating the floors, walls and ceilings, with the light-grey shades of the furniture or the metallic tones of elegant light fittings.

An uncluttered, almost meditative vision that the architect has pushed to its heights in the bedrooms where almost nothing stands between the delicate bedding and the marvellous panoramas springing up behind the tall windows.

The same sights that once drew divine wrath, happily calmed thanks to the intervention of the son of Apollo, who came here to construct a temple to pay homage to the master of Olympus and the wielder of lightning bolts, Zeus.
