In the village of Ancaiano, very close to Siena, stands Villa Terracotta, a former Tuscan farm located on an ancient fiefdom replete with history. The La Cetinale estate, of which the main building, designed in the purest baroque style, dates from the XVII century, was built by Cardinal Flavio Chigi for his uncle, Pope Alexander VII. The gardens of La Cetinale are, furthermore, considered to be amongst the most beautiful in Italy. Napoleon Bonaparte stayed here in 1811, an event commemorated by two busts of the emperor installed at the end of the avenue leading to the property.Learn more
Villa Terracotta stands, peacefully charming, at the foot of "Montagnola Senese", one of the highest hills in the Sienese region, and stands, peacefully charming, beneath the benevolent Tuscan sky. Designed as a family villa, the property exudes serenity. Its rustic aspect, with walls rendered in gradually pinkening plaster and its stone aged by the weather, make it a rural, bucolic place to stay.
In front of the villa, the fragile, elastic silhouettes of cypress trees stand watch over the swimming pool, which, from its terrace of ochre-coloured brick, offers pastoral panoramas of the surrounding natural landscape. At the side of the villa stands a space for meals sheltered by the latticework of a wooden awning, which also supports a flourishing vine.
Inside, everything exudes the characteristic charm of the countryside. Whitewashed surfaces, stoneware tiles, an exposed tiled roof supported by the building's frame – a residual flavour of ages gone by reigns here. The fully-equipped kitchen, which includes a pizza oven, was once the stable, and opens on to the dining room via a large, brick arch.
The seven bedrooms are decorated in a warm style. The beds, with their fine, delicate canopies, have light, hanging fabrics to shield them. Raw wood furniture decorates the immaculate walls, and tells a story of the villa through the ages. The villa also contains three bathrooms and two shower rooms.
A veritable cocoon of comfort, Villa Terracotta is ideal for families or groups of friends. It offers privileged access to the beauties of the Tuscan landscape and the flourishing history of the province of Siena. "Il y a des villes comme les petites villes toscanes qui portent le voyageur, le soutiennent à chaque pas et rendent sa démarche plus légère" ("There are places, such as the little Tuscan villages, that carry the traveller, supporting him in every step and lightening his gait") – Albert Camus.
