As the race ends in Siena, day turns to night, the skyline glowing with orange reds, enveloping villa Felicita where, as the sun dips behind the pines that line the central driveway, floral scents abound in the evening haze. Rose, cyprus, jasmine and lavender perfumes float across the swimming pool, tennis court and large terrace, as cicadas in nearby fields burst in to song.
Nocturnal birds begin their nighttime concert near to the impressive walls of a 1850s villa, with its traditional clay tiled roof and brightly coloured shutters. Inside the large fireplace warms the rooms, its embers reflecting off the solid wood table in the centre of the room. Sumptuous sofas circle it, the light enhanced by an impressive mirror that hangs on a wall with stone lined arches and large bay windows that delimit the rooms.
The bedrooms are equally classic in style; traditional paintings blend with terracotta floors and exposed beams in an elegant melody, next to the delicate fabrics that make up the beds. Each suite has its own spacious bathroom, where marble finishing completes a sophisticated decor.
And so the race is over, the crowd dispersing as the Tuscan sky fills with stars. Soon, another festival will kick off, paying its respects over the weekend to another tradition. The Viareggio carnival is on its way, a noteworthy date in the Italian, if not European, calendar.
